So there was an election on Thursday, and this happened...

0543: DECLARATION: Edinburgh Central - SNP gain. Marco Biagi takes the seat, just 237 votes ahead of Labour's Sarah Boyack. Further success in the cities for the Nationalists.

Congratulations Marco! You're like a proper grown-up now.... I wonder what that's like? Also, I liked your victory speech.

I missed the declaration, despite being awake, but the BBC now have clips online: Scottish election: SNP five celebrate Edinburgh gains. [Marco doesn't appear until the 3.44 mark].

I'm trying to post more than once a year...
Sometimes the world gives you a little something extra special to look forward to:

World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann and four-times Champions League winner Clarence Seedorf have joined the BBC's team to cover the 2010 World Cup.

The pair will be joined in South Africa by Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor and Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker will lead the television coverage.

Source: BBC Sport.

KLINSI! KLINSI! KLINSI! The Klinsmann/Lineker lovefest will make watching Germany crumble into a tiny ball of hate and get knocked out, of the group stages, during the round of 16, after a hard fought semi-final, totally worth it.

Hey Germany, remember when you were any good? Yeah... you're not now are you?

Reading that made me this happy... ... really, really BIG picspammy image behind cut )

No word on Leonardo though which makes me rather sad. Seriously BBC... he might be out of work by June. He's going to need that commenting gig. And BBC guys look at the man, he's oh so pretty. He will quadruple the hotness factor of your team, all on his own. No more worrying about the hotness-drag-factor of Shearer & Lawrenson.

I'm coming out of lurkerdom just for this, but it's really good.

Today I saw the Scottish Luke Danes. He was (almost) identical. The same facial features, backwards baseball cap, dark hair and stubble. He even had the same style jacket and jeans. No sighting of plaid though (or Bert). There were some slight physical differences, Scottish Luke is shorter and thinner, and looked like he was in his mid-twenties or early thirties.

I'm not sure which option I like more: that the similarities were a complete accident or that Luke Danes is someone's style icon... okay, that's a lie, the second option is amazing.

Am still alive. That is all.

But, seriously things have been pretty good. Work is still fun, but quiet at the moment.

I discovered the most useful piece of software a few weeks ago. Sizer, it allows you to resize any window to any size. It comes with three pre-set sizes [640x480, 800x600 & 1024x768] but you can add your own, and best of all you can set where on the desktop it resizes to. It's perfect for people like me who love to use every possible part of the desktop. I have two computers one's set to a 1440x900 resolution and the laptop is set to 1280x800, one's XP the other's Vista and it works perfectly on both. I'm in love. My desktop these days tend to look like this. Blank desktop, just 'cos.

On SGA and the cancellation thereof: At first I was very meh? now I'm starting to get upset. Partly I think because of all the great friends I made in this fandom. I had this idea to try and watch every episode before Enemy at the Gate airs, [2nd Jan 2009 according to the CAT]. I figure it's possible, and I may attempt to post my way through the series.

Just one more thing about Strikethrough 2007. This was linked to by [info]emony, An Open Letter To Fandom by [info]ivyblossom. It's well worth reading.

I suspect they didn't mean to rollover academic communities talking about Nabokov. I suspect they didn't mean to blast incest-survivor groups. But I'm pretty sure they had every intention of packing in communities like [info]pornish_pixies if it would help their image.

So when they talk about the "kind of community" that they want to build, just remember: if you're in fandom writing stuff that might qualify for the communities that got axed, you're probably not their kind of community. Think about that before you give Livejournal any more of your money.

I agree, and I can easily see future pressure from the advertisers forcing more changes while Livejournal acts under the guise of "protecting the children".

Anyway, for the next time this happens *g*, I'm ispahan over at GreatestJournal and InsaneJournal.

This will reassure [info]niennah! BBC denies Doctor Who axing.

The BBC is playing down speculation that hit series Doctor Who is set to be axed.

A spokeswoman has branded as "idle speculation" rumours that writer Russell T Davies plans to call time on the show after series four.

A newspaper reported that the workload - 16 hours a day for nine months of the year - is taking its toll and that Davies wanted to free up time for other projects.

The spokeswoman added: "The BBC has a longterm commitment to Doctor Who.

I think the article was originally in The Sun, but Sky reposted it.

While we're on the subject. Doctor Who set for fourth series.

Doctor Who will return for a fourth series in 2008, executive producer and writer Russell T Davies has confirmed.

Speaking at the premiere of the third series in London, Davies said: "Series four is officially existing. I'm very excited, but we have known for ages."

But he refused to say whether the star of the hit sci-fi show, David Tennant, would return in the lead role.

The third series, which co-stars Freema Agyeman as new assistant Martha Jones, starts on BBC One on 31 March.

I feel quite pleased at the moment, I ordered a bunch of stuff from Staples on Friday, it turned up this morning and they'd gotten the order wrong [very unimpressive and this was was the first time I'd bought anything from them so doubly so]. I phoned their customer services and got them to fix the error, and I got through on the first try. Right through to an actual human being... without having to go through a complicated, automated phone system. I didn't know that was possible. Every time I've had to contact a big company, it's involved at least ten minutes of menu time before reaching anyone. This, and the fact that the guy I spoke to was really helpful and apologetic, makes up for the mistake.

Holly seems to be settling in well. I found film for my camera so I might take loads of pictures over the next week and do a massive picspam once I get the film developed.

248-dimension maths puzzle solved
An international team of mathematicians has detailed a vast complex numerical "structure" which was invented more than a century ago.

Mapping the 248-dimensional structure, called E8, took four years of work and produced more data than the Human Genome Project, researchers said.

E8 is a member of the "Lie group" that describe symmetrical objects.

The team said their findings may assist fields of physics which use more than four dimensions, such as string theory.

you met me at a very strange time in my life
We have a puppy! Her name's Holly, she's a black lab crossed with something and she's adorable. We're not sure quite how old she is [she's a rescue dog and technically she's supposed to be here for a week's trial], the woman at the shelter thought she was about 18 months, but I think that's miles off. Based on her size and behaviour I would have said about 10-12 at the most. I wish I had a digital camera or some film for my regular camera because at the moment she's sitting curled up on one of the kitchen chairs next to me, my computer lives on the kitchen table because I don't yet have a desk for it, [it's very reminiscent of Charlie from the P.J. Tracy books].

I'm going to have to read up on puppy training, it's been a long time since we owned a puppy. Giles was also a rescue dog, but he was fully grown and incredibly well trained, he had a few behavioural issues [the legacy of past abuse] but they gradually disappeared. Holly's got a bit of training, she understands "sit" and "drop" and she was very good in the car on the way back from the shelter. But she's not fully house trained and she's not great on the lead [she's still learning her name so she's not getting off until she learns how to come back]. She's also a chewer, so I'm going to have to invest in some Kongs and hope they last more than the five minutes one of the "hard" toys lasted. Hopefully they might stop her attacking, my boots, a pumice stone, a duvet cover, a pair of slippers and the sofa.

Hopefully there will be pictures to follow. I so need a digital camera.
